About Fictive Kin

Fictive Kin is a product design and engineering studio based in Brooklyn, NY, but many of our team members are distributed across the continent – a remote work culture has been part of our DNA since inception! We specialize in web, mobile, and connected products. We’ve worked with companies like National Geographic, Samsung, and sweetgreen, to name but a few.

We strongly believe that the Web has the ability to make a significant impact on people’s lives. It can bring us together in new, meaningful ways. It can create new economies and save old ones. It can give us an understanding of our world that was never possible before. It can unite us in service of a higher purpose. All of this potential can be unlocked as long as the right products get built.

At Fictive Kin we understand the value of a diverse team and believe in continuously working towards creating an inclusive work environment.

Front-End Developer

We’re looking for a US-based front-end developer at Fictive Kin who can work closely with designers to implement responsive designs using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You should be experienced at interpreting static designs for multiple device screens and browsers, while always keeping performance in mind. You should also be able to determine when to use complex JavaScript solutions versus simple DOM manipulation. As part of this role, you will be expected to work with team leads to create realistic timelines and communicate effectively with your teammates throughout the development process.

About You

  • 3+ years of experience building
  • Github and portfolio to review with application
  • JS: ES6+
  • CSS: SCSS, BEM, Responsive Design
  • HTML: Templating languages, Jinja and Nunjucks in particular
  • Git: Github Issues, Pull Requests, etc.
  • Comfortable interacting with RESTful and GraphQL APIs
  • Comfortable debugging using web inspector, application logs, etc
  • Familiarity working within established codebases, i.e. formatting, documentation, and linter configurations
  • Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA standards and compliance
  • Comfortable working directly with clients and managing project progress and expectation

Nice to haves:

  • React
  • Familiarity with Contentful
  • Familiarity with 11ty
  • Command line knowledge

You’re probably a good match if…

  • You think of yourself as part of a team rather than an individual embedded in a team.
  • You have a long-term mindset and appreciate the value of compound interest and working hard.
  • You don’t need permission to get to work. You can keep yourself productive and self-direct your energies.
  • If you finish early, you look for other places or other people to help.
  • You care. When FK does good, you feel good. When we screw up, you’re disappointed in us and help us figure out how to do better next time.
  • You are willing to ask for help and be able to apply it.
  • You are most comfortable in situations where you are trusted and held accountable rather than distrusted and micromanaged.

How To Apply

If this sounds like a position you’re interested in, please send us your resume and portfolio/Github, as well as a short write-up about yourself to: hello@fictivekin.com – this inbox will be the only applications source we’ll be checking for this role.
